"5 Little Roses" was a story I came-up with while reading "For Your Eyes Only" by Ian Flemming; a collection of short stories starring James Bond.
Especially inspired by the story "Risico" ["Drugs in Venice"], a story about a 'mostly' clean mob/business man named Enrico Colombo. He doesn't smuggle 'drugs' in the way you might think; he smuggles medical supplies so that poor people can have access to them. Colombo is a bit of a thug however. This gave me a idea to have gentleman mob bosses. Thus Henry Donatienne & Cassian Badger were born. The name "Donatienne" is taking from the story "From A View to A Kill" (once again from the book "For Your Eyes Only"). Bond was sitting in a French café, and in fantasizing about experiencing the 'novel' France, instead of what it really is like. He contemplates hiring a lady-friend for the night and having dinner with her.
"...Today had been so beautiful -one of those days when you almost believe that Paris is beautiful and gay - and Bond had decided to give the town just one more chance. He would somehow find himself a girl who was a real girl, and he would take her to dinner at some make-believe place in the Bois like the Armenonville. To clean the money-look out of her eyes - for it would certainly be there - he would as soon as possible give her fifty thousand francs. He would say to her: 'I propose to call you Donatienne, or possibly Solange, because these are names that suit my mood and the evening. We knew each other before and you lent me this money because I was in a jam. Here it is, and now we will tell each other what we have been doing since we last met in St Tropez just a year ago. In the meantime, here is the menu and the wine list and you must choose what will make you happy and fat.' And she would look relieved at not having to try any more, and she would laugh and say: 'But, James, I do not want to be fat.' And there they would be, started on the myth of 'Paris in the Spring', and Bond would stay sober and be interested in her and everything she said. And, by God, by the end of the evening it would not be his fault if it transpired that there was in fact no shred of stuffing left in the hoary old fairytale of 'A good time in Paris'...."
I had right from the start wanted a character named 'Henry' for it, and 'Henry Donatienne' just-rolls-off the-tongue. Cassian is kinda derived from a root name for 'Kezia', also 'Sarah Cassius' is my Guild Wars character-name. Cassian means "hollow' and Henry means "ruler" just for 'shits&giggles'. 'Badger' came from reading a newspaper article.
Sandy was also a name I had from the start. 'Sandra Carpala'. 'Alexander' is a name I use a lot, and the 'Peugot' also is from "From A View to A Kill"; it was the type of car Mary Ann Russell drove. 'Norm' is just a adaptation of 'Noremon' because "5 Little Roses" was intended for Film12 class (for the script-writing unit), and I was going to play the androgynous character (Norm was always going to be shown wearing a hoodie, or in dim light).
Now 'Zuzu' comes from the movie "It's a Wonderful Life". One of the kids was named Zuzu, and I thought it was such a interesting (and a "why name your kid that?") name that it replaced 'Shei' ans the assassin's name. 'Beta' is just the second/'b' organization, bent on 'dirtying-up' the town with drug, drugs.
In this story three people are killed. Five bullets are fired, hence the title "5 Little Roses", since fired bullets remind me of flowers. now I've realized there are 5 main characters/figures in it; Henry, Cassian, Zuzu, Sandy, & Beta.
I have a outline written-up for it, and have started writing the short story last night. Below is the first scene I wrote last night. I am trying a different writing style for this, since I find my 'usual' style sounds too childish (like what a grade 6 student writes).
It was a slightly windy, somewhat chilly day. A normal spring day. The kind when the air feels like the season of new life and new beginnings, has arrived.
Outside a small urban center, just in front of a breezeway that connects a couple of office buildings to each other. Two young men stepped out of opposite doors, that are passageways into the many tiny offices and lobbies within. Both wore simple suits; slightly beat-about with everyday wear. One of the men had blackish-brown hair. He was slightly taller than the other. The other man had light brown hair and was closely followed out by another shorter brunet man. Their names were; Cassian, Henry, & Alexander. Henry and Cassian both loosely held guns in their hands, arms relaxed from the shoulder down. Cassian in his left. Henry in his right.
"Good day." Announced Henry as if he was stating a fact. Both raised their guns and fired.
"Good day." Replied Cassian as he slumped down to the pavement, Henry's bullet having hit him in the chest; aways in from his left bicep. Cassian's own bullet was lodged into the door frame behind Henry and Alexander, just inches from Henry's right shoulder.
